What Should I do if I encounter bottlenecks in developing habits and performing tasks? Why Writing Bulletproof Notes Can Help Change

Published

on

In an interview recently, I was asked a question: “From studying to employment, developing a slash job, and starting to run a family at the same time, has your time management skills ever encountered bottlenecks at different stages and needed to be adjusted? How did you change it? Strategies?” I couldn’t help but burst out laughing, because it ‘s not a question of whether you have encountered bottlenecks, but that you will encounter various bottlenecks anytime, anywhere, and you need to adjust anytime, anywhere!

But this is exactly what “notes” are for. It helps us remember past adjustments, and also helps us think about how to adjust in the future. Even when our brains are confused, there is still a direction to follow, and there is still a next step we can take. This is the system that best helps us sustain change.
This is why my workflow and time management system start with “notes”.
In my latest online course ” Personal Digital Productivity ” (welcome to use the discount code ESOR500 for regular readers to get a discount) , I will gradually disassemble and start this set of work from such a note-taking system, workflow to time management The whole picture of the method.
Why is “note” the best way to help us overcome bottlenecks?
Because the formation of a habit and the execution of a task are almost impossible to be completed smoothly after planning.
At first I thought it was because I didn’t know how to plan the goals, but later I found out that it was not, because no matter how well the goals are planned, there will still be many problems, such as my daily mood affecting the execution? Unexpected blind spot? Open new horizons and discover better goals? Various changes in the external environment? wait.
Moreover, when a habit or task is carried out for a long time, it is almost always found that the original method is often no longer applicable after a period of time. This is not because the original method is invalid, but the above-mentioned problems will cause us to have to adjust. There will be bottlenecks.
Also because of this, when developing habits and performing tasks, it is often not something you can force yourself to complete by making a to-do list. Instead, you need to constantly think about and record how to adjust your practices in the “notes” so that the habits and tasks can continue go on.
A real example is my own writing habit on “computer toys” for many years.
If you want to ask me what writing habit should I develop? Are there any strategies for continuing to write without feeling lazy and giving up? Well I will tell you that there is no such strategy.
The only strategy I have is that I constantly reflect on the problems I encounter in my notes, adjust and test feasible new steps, and then unknowingly continue the writing habit for more than 15 years.
I still remember that at the beginning, I spent a lot of time reading a lot of new information every day, and then filtered out one or two tools worth introducing, and spent half a day on careful research, and finally wrote an article within a day or two.
But then the full-time work became more and more busy, and the original method was not applicable , so I thought about how to adjust the new writing strategy in my notes. I streamlined the original method of obtaining new information from the notes, so that I can obtain useful tools or techniques in a faster way, but I have no way to concentrate time on testing, so I adjust to testing for my actual work Helpful tools and tips so I can do my research while I’m at work (which also helps to be more productive) and then get back home at night and write up my insights.
However, this method did not last long. Later, when I formed a family and a child was born, the external environment and my own state of mind changed , so I continued to adjust my writing habits and strategies. Still starting from the previous foundation, I think it is effective to test the tools and techniques in my work and life, but I just need to find other writing time, because the time in the evening and morning will be allocated to my family. So I started to test whether there is a way to use fragmentary gaps such as commuting and lunch breaks to complete the article in sections. After a period of testing, it really made me slowly find a way to write like this.
As for the above-mentioned continuous adjustment process, I am constantly modifying and adjusting in a task note of “writing habits”, so that I can see the previous methods and current problems, and constantly test new changes.
The best solution to bottlenecks is to recognize that whether it is to develop habits or perform tasks, we need to change strategies, discover new problems, design new outputs, and continue to experiment and adjust at any time.
And record this process in the “Bulletproof Mission Notes”, the accumulated notes will become the best second brain for us to adopt different strategies in the future.
You can also read the three cases of continuous change and adjustment I shared in this article: ” How to find effective time management skills and tools for me? Just change a key practice “
Recently, in my ” Bulletproof Notes Method ” book club , a reader shared her case of change, and finally mentioned that this method made her realize: ” It turns out that I don’t have procrastination, but I just didn’t know how to do it before. “( You can also read further: Time Management Q&A: Because I procrastinate, so even if I make a to-do list, I won’t do it? )
It’s like when I was developing the habit of running in the morning. Of course, I encountered many setbacks and bottlenecks at the beginning, such as being too lazy to run, bad weather, running not smoothly, etc., but in the end I developed the habit of continuous exercise. The key is not to use some powerful running app or habit recording tool, nor is it the willpower that I force myself to do after listing the to-do list, but:
In the notes of exercise habits, I continued to correct my steps and thoughts, and tried to solve every small problem, and the slow exercise really continued.
Such “habit correction notes” may be more useful than using any app (extended reading: [After work time management] There are so many things I want to do but I have no motivation to do it? Be careful with borrowed goals ).
So gradually, in the process of developing habits and performing tasks, I no longer rely on to-do lists or habit tracking apps, but our continuous correction notes one by one, habits and tasks.
I will continue the following three-step loop in the notes:
  • Hypothesis: Reverse Engineering
    • Through the notes, I can record and push back the entire implementation steps. By seeing the entire operation structure, I can find specific problems in the details.
    • Based on the problem, I would hypothesize some possible solutions and try them out.
  • Experiment: Deliberate Practice
    • The solution I designed may not be effective, but I can experiment and see, and then continue to write the results of the test into the notes.
    • At this time, I will find that some new methods will be effective, and some will not be effective. At this time, I will continue to make assumptions from new problems and continue to experiment.
  • Completion and Iteration: Continuous Adjustment
    • At this time, it doesn’t matter if there are new problems all the time, just like my writing cases and running cases, there are always new problems and new bottlenecks. But as long as we continue to experiment, it means that this habit and task will be continued.
    • In this way, through continuous completion and iteration, we have broken through the bottleneck of the previous period and continued to grow.
It’s not from the data to see if I have developed a habit, but from the notes I keep adjusting, I realize that I am a person who can change myself.
It’s not enough to write down a habit or a to-do list for a task, nor can you just write down a plan and follow it:
Instead, in the notes, it is necessary to constantly reflect on the past, record the present, modify the future, and then repeat the cycle. This process is the best way to keep the task going without giving up.
In the end, this kind of accumulation will also make me truly discover that forming habits and performing tasks is not a process of “setting ambitions”, but a process of “scientists doing experiments”.
Before a scientist completes, he does not know where the result he really needs is, and he does not know what kind of result is best for him, so he has to set a lot of assumptions and actually go to the experiment to see.
Even, there is never a day when the habits and tasks are really completed, but every day can continue the habit and make the tasks better, isn’t that enough?

Decline in GameStop’s Quarterly Revenue

Published

Gamestop

According to financial data, digital gaming sales growth at the Grapevine, Texas, store is not compensating for a drop in in-store purchases.

Despite the company’s best attempts to offset the fall in physical sales with growth in digital transactions, GameStop Corp. just reported its worst quarterly revenue dip in two years. In the three months leading up to October 29th, net sales dropped 8.5% to $1.19 billion, which was lower than the $1.39 billion predicted by two analysts. Loss per share after adjustments came in at 31 cents, which was higher than the predicted loss of 29 cents. The company is only worth $7 billion, and its stock is extremely volatile, therefore very few analysts cover it.

Since becoming chairman of the board this year, Ryan Cohen has been working to reinvigorate GameStop’s growth in Grapevine, which has slowed as customers switch from purchasing game CDs to purchasing digital downloads. To make matters worse, COVID-19 lockdowns crippled GameStop’s retail operation, and supply shortages on consoles have further impacted profits.

According to market research firm NPD Group, overall spending in the gaming business fell 5% in the third quarter compared to the same period a year ago.

Earlier this week, Axios reported that GameStop has begun a new wave of layoffs, with a particular focus on the team developing the company’s blockchain wallet. GameStop also announced layoffs of an undisclosed number of employees and the departure of CFO Mike Recupero in July.

In its earnings release, GameStop said nothing about layoffs

Cohen has been trying to get GameStop involved in digital assets, but it’s been difficult. The company began transitioning into nonfungible tokens in September, when it announced a partnership with cryptocurrency exchange FTX US. The parties agreed to work together on some new e-commerce and online marketing projects and stock some stores with FTX gift cards. However, the crypto market went into a tailspin in November after FTX imploded with $9 billion in liabilities and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

CEO Matt Furlong stated on an earnings call with analysts that GameStop does not have “a meaningful balance of any cryptocurrency.” We have not and will not put significant shareholder capital at risk by entering this market.

Furlong has stated his optimism for the continued development of digital assets

GameStop became a symbol of the meme-stock mania that swept the retail trading community during the pandemic, in which the price of specific stocks was driven up by online discussion of such stocks on Reddit and other social media platforms rather than by any actual business fundamentals. The stock price, which is down 40% so far this year, rose by around 1% in after-hours trading on Wednesday in response to the news.

Case of the alphabet U.S. drone operations expansion: Wing wants FAA’s blessing D.C. (Reuters)

The Google subsidiary Wing Aviation has applied for a waiver from some FAA drone regulations so that it can expand its operations beyond a single small city in Virginia, according to a notification published by the FAA on Friday. As of early 2019, Wing has supplied a multitude of services for locals of Christiansburg, Virginia, including both scheduled and emergency deliveries. With the goal of serving more people, “Wing is now aiming to expand and improve upon these operations,” the company claimed in its request for waivers from some FAA drone regulations. The organization promised to listen to petitioners before reaching a final call. The FAA was informed by Wing that the company had “made major investments targeted to strengthen both the safety and capacity” of drone operations in the United States. More than 17 months have passed with no reported incidents. Wing seeks FAA clearance to move remote pilot activities “to regional operations centers that can monitor and safely handle a greater number of airliners at once. When it grows, Wing aims to utilize a variant “that has been demonstrated to be dependable in commercial operations and is extremely comparable in its operating characteristics,” Wing said. Yet “to identify and accept this alternate aircraft version,” approval from the FAA is required.

In addition, during the interval, Wing requested that the FAA conduct operator line inspections once every 12 months rather than every three. According to the report, “current limitations will make it infeasible to grow a light-footprint, distributed operation across a neighborhood,” therefore the amendments “will assist assure that more American homes may experience the benefits of (drone) technology.” Small drones can now legally fly over people and at night without special permission under new FAA regulations that went into effect on Wednesday. The long-awaited guidelines require remote identification technology in most situations to enable drone identification from the ground, which is intended to alleviate security concerns.
