ALWAYS COLD HANDS: CAUSES AND REMEDIES

INTRODUCTION

Externally perceived body temperature is usually the result of more superficial blood circulation; if in physiological conditions this is left to flow normally by the nervous controls, in case of need the body can opt to partially reduce the flow of blood that travels from the heart , along the arm, to the fingertips.

  • Vaso-occlusion : This occurs when one or more blood vessels in the hand or wrist become blocked, such as by a blood clot or other material.

There are numerous diseases capable of affecting blood vessels and capable of sustaining processes of vasoconstriction and vaso-occlusion that are not necessarily physiological (ie normal); one of the most common is Raynaud’s phenomenon/disease , during which an abnormal reaction occurs in the hand following exposure to cold:

  • in patients in which it is not possible to trace and diagnose the triggering cause, we speak of primary Raynaud’s (or syndrome or disease), a more frequent and generally not serious condition;
  • when, on the other hand, the disturbance is caused by another upstream pathology, for example scleroderma, mixed connective tissue disease , polydermatomyositis , it is called secondary Raynaud’s (or phenomenon).

In affected patients, the arteries in the fingers and toes suddenly narrow when exposed to cold, and the blood vessels close excessively; that is, it is an exaggerated reaction, in which a progressive change of color is characteristically observed:

  • white (because the artery is closed),
  • then it can turn blue or purple, and when it heats up,
  • eventually it may turn red (because the artery is now fully open and dilated).

Other diseases include:

  • peripheral arterial disease (PAD);
  • autoimmune rheumatologic conditions , such as
    • scleroderma ,
    • lupus
    • rheumatoid arthritis ;
  • sluggish thyroid
  • anemia
  • diabetes

SYMPTOMS

Always having cold hands is in itself a symptom, not a disease, which could also be accompanied by a bluish color ( cyanosis ) linked to the reduction of available oxygen. It should be noted that, following the reopening of the blood vessels, some subjects first develop a red complexion perhaps associated with pain, after which the physiological pink color is recovered and possibly a sense of swelling and tingling . This subsequent evolution can also be observed when very cold hands are placed under a jet of hot water, which excessively speeds up the vasodilation of the arteries.

WHEN TO WORRY?

Constantly having cold hands is not necessarily a sign of illness, but it is recommended to check with your doctor in case of:
